The Bizarre Disappearance of Kadin Black

Here is a complex case out of Pennsylvania that involves a hardworking young man labeled as “troubled”, a “helpful” family that gives many (except the local police department, of course!) the feeling that things aren’t quite right, and a heartbroken yet determined mother who tried to do what’s best for her son. The family and community are praying the truth comes out as soon as possible.

Kadin Black was living in Wrightsville, Pennsylvania when he vanished in December 2022. He had just turned 19. He deposited his work check (he worked for a moving company) into his bank account a few days before, and it remained untouched; unused. Kadin called and talked to his mom to confirm their Christmas plans that day – he truly loved Christmas. His family describes him as hilarious, athletic, and a guy who loved taking care of himself and his well-being with healthy eating and working out – he encouraged his family always to do the same. Kadin was so athletic that he captain of the football team in highschool. He was training to become a lightweight boxer, going to the gym each and every day despite working a lot. Kadin once biked 50 miles in a day just to prove to himself that he could.

Consequentially, Kadin would often get in trouble for fighting at school because he stood up to bullies. He had no patience for those who lacked kindness. He hated seeing anyone else be talked down to. An important thing to mention is that there are hardly any mixed or black people in this community, apparently, and he definitely faced some racism and discrimination. It was later discovered he had bipolar disorder and was on the spectrum, which explained some of his difficulties with schoolwork and “fitting in”, and he switched to Paradise School in Adams County. This school was known for supporting teens with these sorts of disorders.

THE FOUST FAMILY

At the time of Kadin’s disappearance, he was staying with his friend Ethan Foust and the Foust family: Chris and Amy Foust, and their children, Ethan as I mentioned, and Josie (who was only a little younger than Ethan and Kadin).

Kadin and Ethan had been friends at school for years and years. Kadin’s mom got a promotion and had to move to Maryland while Kadin was enjoying his highschool life, so Kadin ended up asking his parents if he could stay with the Fousts. His mom, Kara, didn’t want him to – since she had already seen some of the racism he faced, she was scared of what could happen in his future in that town – and she didn’t know the Fousts personally. Kadin eventually convinced Kara to let him go, and as he was legally 18 and an adult, she gave him her blessing.

Chris Foust stated he was very happy to have Kadin around to take bike rides with and fun things of a physical nature since his own son mostly enjoyed indoor hobbies. I don’t know much about Amy or Josie, but I know Chris is a former air traffic controller who previously studied theology – a current job isn’t mentioned.

Forebodingly, Kara is quoted as saying,

I wish he never moved back there. I just knew something would happen.”

THINGS DO NOT ADD UP

The police chief stated back in April of this year at a news conference: “He left unexpectedly without any notice, and at this time, there was no indications of foul play. We are now considering him missing, and we are doing this as an inquiry for his well-being.”

The chief also said that at the time of disappearance, the only things Black took with him were his cellphone and wallet and that he also deleted several social media platforms at that time. It seems to be unknown if Kadin himself deleted those, or if somebody else did so.

Nobody saw Kadin leave the house, apparently. They allegedly just “woke up and he was gone”. He went missing Saturday, and yet his parents didn’t receive word until Tuesday. His dad tried to get ahold of him on Saturday night checking if Kadin was coming in the morning to take a run with his dad’s dogs as he often did, and the messages were left unread. Kadin never showed up.

His dad called and texted Chris all weekend – no response. Tuesday morning, his dad finally gets a call back from Chris: “We haven’t seen Kadin since Saturday, is he at your house?”

His dad saw him earlier on Saturday; Kadin said he was going home (the Foust’s house). The last place Kadin’s phone pinged was also at that home. Strangely, everything in this case, no matter which route you take – seems to lead back to the house and the family that “took him in”. The phrasing of this is bothersome as Kadin had a perfectly good relationship with his mom and his brothers, he wasn’t just lost on the streets or in the system. He simply wanted to stay in town because that’s where his friends were as well as his favorite gym, and his mom had moved hours away. Kadin did not get along with his dad’s fiancee and often butted heads with his dad also, so living with the Fousts seemed like a rational choice.

For a long time, Kadin’s mom was told his phone pinged “within 2 miles” of the Foust home. Later on, Chris calls and says, “They’re searching my house and they have dogs and I don’t know what they’re looking for. They’re saying Kadin may have a second cellphone,” which made no sense to Kara, because Kadin couldn’t even afford his original phone let alone a second one. The police told her they were just doing a “more thorough search”.

A month after this search, she finds out from someone at the DA’s office the search was because they were looking for Kadin’s phone with dogs who detect electronics – there is no second phone involved. Kadin’s phone last pinged AT the Foust home on SUNDAY at 9:28AM before it died/was turned off. Chris had said he got up at 6am that Sunday and Kadin wasn’t there. The phone was never retrieved. Kara says Chris’ house is small & well-kept with “nothing out of place”.

So where is this phone?

Kadin’s car was having some problems, it still ran but needed some work, so supposedly Chris was letting him use his car to take to work. Kadin had to work on Monday, and Chris’ car and Kadin’s car was still there all day long… why didn’t Chris call his parents on Monday then?

Kadin’s ID was found in Chris’ vehicle, as well as a bank slip from the bank for December 16 that shows him depositing his paycheck. His phone records show he called the gym he goes to on Saturday around 6:30PM, the gym owner confirmed it was him who called. Kadin wanted to come work out, but the owner informed him they were about to close for the night. Kadin sounded normal in this phone call, and appeared to be looking forward to coming back to the gym as soon as possible.

So, something occurred between 6:30PM on Saturday and 9:28AM on Sunday.

His mom states the cops they waited too long to search the Foust house – the cops said they couldn’t search because it was too cold outside, then they said they couldn’t search once the weather warmed up because it was too wet and muddy (excuses) – they waited at least a month after Kadin went missing. They did a search on the banks of the river, and a drone search. It’s a very rural area with lots of land and trees.

So allegedly he left the house without being seen or heard without taking his phone or car or money or ID. His wallet and debit card have not been found, and the debit card has never been used.

Now, this town is incredibly, overwhelmingly white, and this news article… well, please read it yourself especially the “Conspiracy theories on social media” section. It is awful and understandably sent Kadin’s family into an uproar. This article seems to want to spread a message of: The Fousts are a WONDERFUL All-American family who would never harm a fly let alone a teen that lived with them. This kid was black and troubled! Obviously that’s what made him disappear.

The article is so off-putting. The Fousts put so much info out there that his family didn’t, a lot of it isn’t entirely accurate, and 99% of the additional info appears to be put out there to make the Fousts look better and Kadin and his family look not-so-great. I am left wondering if the Fousts have community connections to help with this situation at hand.

“He felt he didn’t deserve what we were doing for him,” Amy said. “He couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that two people who barely knew him cared about him.” She said, “He looked at us and our family and wondered why he couldn’t have that. He just wanted to start over and have a better life.”

This is offensive to his family. What a self-congratulatory statement.

Kadin had a perfectly good home with his mother and his brother – he loved them and spoke to his mom and his little brother every single day. He couldn’t wait for Christmas. He wanted to be in PA because he missed his friends there – multiple people have stated this, inside and out of his family. Also – they “barely knew him” but he was over to their house all the time with their son, for a long time, since they were little kids? Sharing dinners and the like? There is some cognitive dissonance taking place.

Kadin with his wonderful family Christmas 2022

This past winter, when the temperatures dipped into the single digits, the epoxy finish on the Fousts’ garage floor cracked. Chris posted a photo of the cracks on Facebook and that led to speculation among commenters that the Fousts had killed Kadin, cut up his body and buried the parts under the concrete garage floor. “We stay off (social media) now,” Chris said. “That makes us never want to help anybody out again. We didn’t expect this to happen.”

Chris, actually, has not stayed off social media whatsoever.

Chris had said Kadin went missing between Saturday and Tuesday, but his phone died on Sunday morning connected to the Foust wifi. Chris saw Kadin every day – it has been said Kadin always came home for dinner – he wasn’t worried at all not seeing Kadin for 3 or 4 days? They worked on Kadin’s vehicle together ALL the time – Chris posted pics on FB constantly – so I really wonder about this timeline.

Speaking of the vehicle – why did Chris Foust quickly list Kadin’s Toyota 4Runner – that his mother gifted him, that Kadin worked on relentlessly with dogged determination – FOR SALE just a few months after he went missing? It’s almost like he knew Kadin wasn’t coming back. He listed Kadin’s vehicle for sale on FB Marketplace very quickly.

He sold the Toyota for $8500 after reducing the price, apparently to get it sold quicker. While I hope an undercover detective bought it for evidentiary purposes, it seems unlikely.

Chris did not offer to sell Kadin’s mom or dad the vehicle. nor did he donate any of the money from the sale towards the reward in this case. Chris had multiple vehicles he could’ve sold, but only sold this one. The cops never searched this vehicle, and Chris sold it for way less than he allegedly put into it (way over $10,000, he said)

As I referred to earlier, Chris did not stop making social media posts. Some of these posts include him posting that he would black out on his sleeping pills or epilepsy medication (of course, the post appears to be deleted now). Another post includes photos of the cracks in the epoxy in his garage… his formerly carpeted garage.

Maybe Chris wrongfully thinks people aren’t paying attention.

He didn’t worry about searching for Kadin, either. He did not participate in a single search, according to the family. He hasn’t reached out and asked how he could go about supporting Kadin’s family emotionally through this horrific, endless tragedy. He clearly just wants to move on with life like nothing happened despite a missing teenager’s phone being connected to his WiFi after he went missing – a teenager he supposedly loved so much… spent thousands on fixing his car, spent many hours fixing said car with him, and taught the word of the Lord to! But he didn’t care about him once he disappeared. Seems totally normal to me! Definitely checks out!

ADDITIONAL INFO

As stated previously, Kadin was facing charges in an assault case.

The Fousts say they bailed him out while he awaited trial. Regarding this case, according to his family, he had a high chance of getting the charges dropped and dismissed as a camera from the bus taped the incident which shows Kadin simply defending himself. His family reviewed it themselves (with an open mind Kadin could be in the wrong – they knew he wasn’t an angel), and they said 100% Kadin was attacked by this driver after a verbal argument. Kadin’s anger is understandable in this scenario. A white driver assigning the only black kid on the bus to the very back seats… are we in the 1950s?

However, being a 19 year old kid, he was pretty scared of this court date. But if he left due to that, I’d assume he’d take wallet, phone, etc, and just drive or take a bus or train or plane down to Mexico or wherever else. His bank account, as I said, was and is untouched.

A “psychic” told his parents that Kadin was killed, dismembered, and put in the river. Most people are rightfully cautious about quote unquote psychics, and I hope that this proposed scenario is false. However, his family definitely do not think he is living anymore. The police did do a diving search in this area based on the tip from the alleged psychic – I do commend them for exploring a tip regardless of its potential value. Sadly, they didn’t find anything.

The police state they’re not getting any tips on this case and it’s surprising to them. They get tips on basically every case they put out… not a singular tip on Kadin.

Naturally, there is a small chance Kadin just left without any belongings for some reason (completely unlike any previous behavior) and perhaps got hit by a drunk/distracted driver who moved him out of panic. Perhaps he committed suicide – he was quite anxious about his upcoming court date for the bus driver incident.

With all the circumstantial stuff that has happened in the past year, my thoughts go to where Kadin was last seen and where his phone last pinged. If I forgot anything or if any additional events occur, I will make a follow up post.

A sweet text exchange between Kadin and his mama, Kara. They said I love you to eachother all the time.

All she wants is to tell him she loves him again. Please share Kadin’s story and let’s get him home where he belongs.

Update: Kara Nichols was found deceased.

[I’m behind the times a bit due to personal matters and I apologize. This update occurred in February 2022.]

During a review of Kara’s case, a witness was contacted and produced a new lead. The statements of this witness led investigators to search an area in Black Forest, Colorado.

Remains were then found in the 9600 block of Burgess Road.

Positive identification was made by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office – the body belonged to Kara.

Her parents’ decade long search for her whereabouts is finally over.

Kara was placed four feet underground, wrapped in three layers of sealed duct tape and black plastic bags. Her body was found in the exact manner as the witness had said it would be.

Quickly after the tragic discovery of her body, a 46 year old man named Joel Hollendorfer was charged with second degree murder and tampering with physical evidence. His bond was set at $1 million. The District Attorney’s Office then decided to upgrade the murder charge to first-degree, and the judge revoked Mr. Hollendorfer’s bail.

Joel Hollendorfer had confided in the witness that he “accidentally killed an escort”, and that he buried this woman on his mother’s farm. His story was that he accidentally strangled her while they were having sex.

The coroner’s report detailed probable heroin intoxication, a substance Kara was known to struggle with.

May her soul be at peace.

A statement from her parents:

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart, that we share that we were informed yesterday by authorities, that our beautiful daughter’s remains were found and a suspect has been arrested in the case.

We are writing to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for all of those who tirelessly gave time, money, attention and assistance to finding Kara over the past ten years.

Due to the unremitting support and help from National Women’s Coalition Against Violence & Exploitation (NWCAVE) the past decade they will continue to be by our family’s side, manage this page and be a voice for Kara as we seek justice in this case.

Kara Nichols’ family makes statement after woman’s remains were discovered in Black Forest | FOX21 News Colorado

Kara Nancy Nichols, age 19, a daughter, sister, animal lover, and model went missing from Colorado in October 2012.

Supposedly told her 3 male roommates that she was on her way to a photoshoot in Denver; she was never seen again.

By Kelsie Finnigan

Kara Nichols was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on May 20th, 1993, the daughter of Julia and Paul Nichols. They were proud to have a beautiful baby like Kara. Her parents adored her. She had an older brother, and a baby sister came along soon after she was born. The family was close and spent a lot of time together. Things appeared picture perfect, and they were, for quite some time.

All of this changed around the time Kara was 15. She loved the family’s pet dog more than anyone or anything in this world and they were best friends. Her dog passed away. This changed her life considerably. The grief seemed overwhelming for Kara, she could not believe how much it hurt to lose her best animal friend. She fell into a deep depression, and her parents could not pull their teenage daughter out of her misery. Kara had a hard time regulating her emotions and her parents feared something was wrong, more so than her dog passing away.

Julia and Paul made appointments for her with a therapist and a psychiatrist, but Kara resisted the diagnoses she received and didn’t take the prescribed medication. It is said her diagnoses included bipolar disorder and/or borderline personality disorder. She fell in with some new friends at school who impressed her by doing ‘dangerous’ things she hadn’t tried yet as a kid since she was usually focused on doing well in school and enjoying being at home. She looked up to the new friends.

Kara did not want to take the prescribed medications because they made her feel weird, but her new friends offered her drugs that they seemed to enjoy, so Kara decided to give these drugs a chance. For a short time after taking them, she would feel alive and as if the sadness had been lifted. She knew drugs were bad, but this was the first time she had felt happiness in a long time… why would she want to stop? She worked on keeping her secret from her parents but they realized quickly what was going on.

When Kara began using, it amplified her rebellious urges and tendencies toward mania. She immediately began cycling between mania and depression, and this gave her anxiety. She tried to numb herself. This fast rollercoaster of emotions can be very dangerous for an unmedicated bipolar individual, and they may not be able to stop themselves from making impulsive or irrational decisions. Kara’s cycling between mania and depressive episodes could potentially have been an aspect of her disappearance.

Kara decided to attend high school that allowed her to work at her own pace, so she decided to attend a local alternative high school, Life Skills of Colorado Springs. She was super smart and adaptable so she had no time cruising through schoolwork. She graduated, and her support system was very proud of her as she had hopes, dreams, and goals for the future once again. Her family could breathe for the first time in a few years.

After graduation, Kara had 2 jobs: modeling part time and waitressing at a local restaurant. Her modeling portfolio consisted mostly of lingerie shoots, partially because they paid more than clothed shoots. She also created a profile on Model Mayhem, an online modeling site that links models and photographers judging by distance, style wanted, and experience wanted.

In the summer of 2012, Kara quit her jobs and moved with her family to Chicago, Illinois. When Kara fell even deeper into the rabbit hole of addiction, Julia and Paul tried to help her out by enrolling her in a drug treatment program. Unfortunately, she was discharged early on for not following the rules of the program.

That August, after being kicked out of this program, Kara moved back to Colorado Springs on her own. She was very independent and liked her business to be her business. She was sick of being worried about, and she had also missed her friends there and the atmosphere of CS in general. She lived in a home with three male roommates somewhere along Mission Road in the Cimarron Hills area of Colorado Springs. Her big brother lived nearby which was a relief for her loved ones.

On the evening of October 9, 2012, Kara left her home after informing her roommates that she was heading out to Denver for a modeling shoot. Shortly after Kara walked out the door, a dark sedan was seen pulling away from the curb, and the roommate assumed it was her ride.

I have no idea if the roommates were thoroughly investigated. I’d normally assume they did, but this PD didn’t seem to do much right in the beginning of this investigation.

Over the next two days, Kara’s brother, who lived nearby, attempted to call and send text messages to her, but she never picked up her phone. Kara Nancy Nichols never returned home and has not been heard from since. He reported her missing to the El Paso County Sheriff’s office three days later on October 12, after a search by family and friends led nowhere.

When authorities searched the room, they discovered Kara left behind items she would need if she planned to be away for long: her purse, identification, clothes, makeup, laptop, and $300.

Her phone records, bank account, and social media have shown no activity since she vanished. The last activity on her phone were texts sent on the night of her disappearance, around 11:45 pm. Her cell phone, which has not been found, last pinged to cellular towers north of her home in the direction of Denver.

The investigation into Kara having disappeared floundered initially due to the harsh criticisms of deputies and detectives on the team. As is so often the case regarding those with substance use issues, Kara was being looked at and treated as if she was sub-human for having the problems she did. I think that is despicable, and all missing people deserve to be cared for and found.

A recording capturing the view of one police officer on the case was leaked in May of 2014 by EPCSD, and it shocked Kara’s family and the community. *Here is part of an article from Gazette dot com about what happened when Deputy Porter was confronted by Undersheriff Presley and Sheriff Maketa:*

>In the 50-minute recording, a man identified as patrol deputy Cliff Porter is confronted in by Undersheriff Paula Presley, Law Enforcement Bureau Chief Al Harmon and Sheriff Terry Maketa about statements he made in the Nichols case.

>

>Porter was taken off the case after a couple of months, but he came under fire after statements he made to his replacement were reported to his superiors. He repeated those statements in meeting apparently recorded in March.

>

>”I said you know … maybe somebody would finally just say, look, this is a cold case, this girl is probably dead, we’re going to work the leads but we’re going to shelve this thing, and we won’t overreact every time Mr. Nichols comes in,” the man says in the recording.

>

>The recording was released in a response to a complaint Porter filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Tuesday, alleging that Maketa tried to bully him into supporting John Anderson in a bid for sheriff.

>

>On Thursday, Julia and Paul Nichols released a statement in response to the recording and Porter’s lawsuit.

>

>**”The fact that Deputy Porter has the gall to use our daughter’s case as a way to cover his own ineptitude is infuriating,” their statement read.**

>

>**Julia Nichols said the recording indicates that Porter mishandled the case – something they believed all along.**

>

>In the first few weeks, we were wondering why he wouldn’t respond to our calls, and when he did, he seemed very cynical, very negative about the possibility of finding our daughter alive,” Julia Nichols said Thursday. She said the family’s requests to meet Porter were dealt with reluctantly.**

>

>A new detective was assigned to the case in February 2013, she said. **But she believes the case has gone cold, and criticizes the Sheriff’s Office for being ineffective.”You just wonder what else has gone on. You wonder how many other victims have been treated like this,” Nichols said. “It just re-victimized a family who’s already suffering.”**

Another alarming event occurred when the sheriff at the time of Kara’s disappearance, Terry Maketa, got indicted on multi-count felony and misdemeanor charges relating to his affair with Undersheriff Paula Presley as well as an ex-commander named Juan San Agustin on charges that include conspiracy to commit extortion, witness tampering and even second-degree kidnapping (indictment linked in ‘Sources’ section). Julia Nichols has been, understandably, asking that her daughter’s case be reopened and ran through again with more attentive eyes, since she now knows the sheriff’s office was in turmoil when Kara vanished.

Terry Maketa

”When my daughter went missing, the department was in what appears to be complete disarray,” Julia Nichols said during an interview with a local news station. “It leads us to think very little was done in her case, even though they gave lip service to working hard to solve my daughter’s disappearance.”

She went on to say, “It’s hard to believe people who are elected to a trusted position in law enforcement who could have come so far in the public’s trust could behave that way.”

Once the investigators (the ones who actually did care about Kara and finding her) were made aware of the sort of lifestyle Kara lived, they were convinced foul play was involved.

Her parents tried everything to lead Kara to sobriety: tough love, not tough love, private mental health facilities, detoxes, rehabs. Kara’s parents would do anything to save their daughter. Unfortunately, drugs had such a massive hold on Kara that little progress was ever made toward recovery.

It was discovered Kara did work with a pimp, and knowing all of these details broke her loved one’s hearts. Shortly before her disappearance, she allegedly had a falling out with this guy (unnamed). Lots of people think this is the truth of what happened. Her family desperately wished they could save her but she fell in with the wrong people and her self-esteem seemed to depend on the predatory men she was surrounded by. They were also her ticket to ‘keeping well’.

It is heartbreaking that Kara’s parents struggle with a lot of guilt. Addiction does not discriminate and it is a family disease.

On November 20th, 2012, the police announced they were searching for two brunette women – one with a half-sleeve tat on her arm – who reportedly had spent much of the day with Kara before she went missing.

There are 2 photos of one of the women located on the CharleyProject page, but her name hasn’t been released. It is unknown as to whether the sheriff’s department knows her name or not.

On November 30, 2012, there was a potential break in the case. A profile featuring her photos popped up on MyRedBook, an online Las Vegas escort site. When police called the number on the ad, her family was devastated to report that the voice on the other end was *not* their daughter’s.

Authorities discovered that escort websites often use random pictures lifted from the Internet to advertise online. They dismissed the profile.

Foul play is strongly suspected in Kara Nancy Nichols’s disappearance. Authorities pointed to a strong possibility that she may have been targeted by a new sort of organized group that seemed to become a noticeable issue in America in the 2000s – groups specially created for the exploitation and basically, slavery of models. They would oftentimes harm models they promised a photoshoot as well as payment to. She was registered on a site called Model Mayhem which some people believe participates in these organized groups.

Kara’s bio on Model Mayhem read as follows:

My name is Kara and I’m 19 years old. I’ve been modeling since February 2012, and although I’m new to it modeling is something I am very passionate about and I take my work seriously. Currently I’m working on building my portfolio so I’m always looking for modeling opportunities in my area. I’ve done mostly lingerie shoots so far but I’m extremely open minded and I’m willing to work with you on ideas for shoots so contact me if you’re interested in working with me!

NOTE TO PHOTOGRAPHERS — due to my financial situation I am mainly focused on paid work. I am still open for TF shoots but paid work takes priority for now. Please contact me for serious requests only.

A case filed against Internet Brands, who operates Model Mayhem, was originally dismissed in 2014 but was later revitalized by the court. A woman, referred to in court documents as Jane Doe, was an aspiring model who had created a profile on Model Mayhem.

Jane Doe claims she was contacted and invited to a casting session in 2011, but it was a malicious sham. She was drugged and then raped on camera by two men.

There are many stories of these sort of men who would also do things like get young models hooked on drugs so they’re easier to control, pimp them out, sell them to other men or organized groups, and generally make their lives a living hell… and that’s just if someone survives the initial kidnapping. Where do the two women become involved? Many believe the two women were sent by one of these groups as a way to ease Kara into attending her ‘photo shoot’ in Denver.

Over the years, there have been numerous reported sightings of Kara. Some have reportedly seen her accompanied by a man in the area of Fillmore Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The witnesses stated that Kara appeared frightened of the man. These alleged sightings have never been confirmed and this man has never been identified.

If you know anything about the disappearance of 19 year old Kara Nancy Nichols, please call the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department in Colorado Springs, Colorado at 719-520-7227 and reference case number 12-12983.

Where is Lauren Cho, the beautiful and talented 30 year old woman missing from the artist commune ‘The Whole’ in Yucca Valley, California?

A little after 5:30pm on Monday, June 28th, 2021, squad cars with loud, echoing sirens drove down a quiet road to arrive on a fittingly serene property in Yucca Valley, California. A man named Cody Orell had reported his former girlfriend and current travel partner missing – Lauren Cho. Lauren (referred to as El by her loved ones) had met Cody through mutual friends at a get-together on Memorial Day and became close right away.

Cody always dreamt of living out west, and Lauren, sick of her job as a highschool teacher, spontaneously decided to join him in his adventure. They joined a sort-of art commune named The Whole, and fit in immediately with the artists and musicians there. This decision somehow, unfortunately, led to her disappearance.

They had driven all the way from New Jersey to live in California in December of 2020, and the couple didn’t waste any time – they became fixtures in the small community they were a part of – Bombay Beach, population 415. Lauren was locally known for turning Cody’s tour bus into a food truck, and she invited people for dinner nearly constantly, winning new friends nightly with the creative recipes she had invented.

Having a food truck was her dream, and cooking was her passion. Cho was as good at making friends as she was at cooking, and a new friend, Tao Ruspoli, invited her to work as a chef in Yucca Valley for his collection of Airbnbs called ‘The Whole’. Yucca Valley was an hour and a half from Bombay Beach, and part of the deal was getting to live on the property, so Lauren gladly accepted the offer. Cody joined her in Yucca Valley.

Cody Orell claims he walked into the bus, witnessed an upset Lauren storm out. He decided not to follow her immediately. This was around 5pm. When Lauren hadn’t returned, Cody claims he searched for Lauren, calling out her name as he wandered the property. “There was a 10-minute window there and she evaporated,” Orell said in a phone interview with the Hi-Desert Star on Thursday, July 1.

Cody called 911 when there was no trace of Lauren anywhere around the property, inside or out. Lauren had been wearing Doc Martens at the time of her disappearance. Doc Martens are a brand of boots with a very distinctive pattern that would be easy to spot in the sand and dirt. When Cody granted an interview to the local paper (the Hi-Desert Star), he said of the incident, “I searched all the hills and no tracks, anywhere.”

Cody also mentioned that Lauren had said on Sunday, the day before she disappeared, that she was going out to meet someone and didn’t say who. Cody did not pry at the time, but says he regrets that now. He is convinced Lauren got into a vehicle with someone, as he believes she would have followed the trails if she did walk into the hills, and thus a sign of her would have been found by now. The police shared similar sentiments, as did the multiple search and rescue teams that combed through the surrounding desert for Lauren all through the month of July.

Multiple friends who called the sheriff’s station frantically said that Lauren had texted them expressing suicidal thoughts and talked about leaving everything behind. Within a couple of days, local residents called to say they saw her with a man at a restaurant in Yucca Valley, but nothing ever came of this lead.

According to the sheriff’s report of Orell’s call for help, placed at 5:13 p.m., Cho walked into the hills between Yucca Valley and Morongo Valley. Orell tried to find her and then called their circle of friends for help. He told the sheriff’s station she didn’t take her phone, water or food.

Lauren’s friend and fellow artist, Jeff Frost, who lived with Cho at The Whole, said that Lauren found value in everyone else except for herself. Despite Lauren’s many talents and achievements – being a Tae Kwan Do champion by the age of 12, and getting the chance to travel Europe as a talented soprano member of a choir as a teenager – she never gave herself value, which was devastating to everyone who knows and loves her. Her family and friends consistently tried to raise the 30 year old’s self esteem.

To another of Lauren’s friend, RJ Okay, Lauren Cho is a motivated dreamer who is excited about the future – definitely not someone who would willingly leave the life she was beginning to build in California. “We had dinner the night before,” he said. “I thought for sure she’d be back for dinner again that night.”

On July 2, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officially suspended its search and rescue operation, telling the Hi-Desert Star on July 6 that Cho’s case was classified as a missing person. “At this time, there is a current investigation, there is no particular person of interest, and all avenues of leads are being looked into,” Sgt. Stafford of the Morongo Basin Station told the newspaper, adding that they did not expect to resume a search effort unless new leads were developed.

But on July 24th, the search resumed when the department conducted aerial searches of the mountain terrain near where Lauren had been staying. Then on July 31st, officers served a search warrant at the AirBnb where Cho had been living, according to a press release issued by the department on Aug. 2. They used seven dogs to search the property as well as other nearby areas for evidence.

At the time, the department said in its release that more operations would be conducted as further leads were developed. It was more forthcoming about the reason for the search in a statement to the Hi-Desert Star.

“We sought a search warrant due to the property owner not being present and multiple people on site living at the location,” Sgt. Eric Smoot told the newspaper, noting that it was the second search warrant served on the property. He added that the weather in the area had been hampering search efforts for Lauren.

A very important development occurred on September 21, 2021. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release, “Investigators with San Bernardino County Sheriff’s, Specialized Investigations Division are assisting the Morongo Basin Station in the effort to locate Lauren Cho. Investigators are investigating all leads and working with family and friends of Ms. Cho. Future search operations will occur as further leads develop.”

The investigation had previously been led by detectives from the department’s Morongo Basin Station. The Specialized Investigations Division includes the Homicide Detail, Crimes Against Children Detail and the Polygraph Detail, which investigate major crimes including homicides and suspicious deaths.

“Investigators are investigating all leads and working with family and friends of Ms. Cho. Future search operations will occur as further leads develop,” according to the sheriff’s department.

Those with information about the search for Cho can contact Detective Edward Hernandez or Sergeant Justin Giles, Specialized Investigations Division, at (909) 387-3589.

Tao, a famous filmmaker, grew up on a commune in Rome, and was trying to replicate it in the California desert with The Whole. He was formerly married to actress Olivia Wilde. Tao made a documentary you may be familiar with, entitled Monogamish (2017), where he travels the US heartbroken after the divorce between he and Olivia. Mr. Ruspoli interviews people about sex, love, and marriage. One of the people he interviews just so happens to be Neil Strauss – also known as the most outspoken public advocate for the Elaine Park case, as he hosts a podcast about her called To Live and Die in LA which has sparked tons of energy and conversation regarding Elaine’s 2017 disappearance (she is still missing).

Either Neil doesn’t know about Lauren Cho so he has not helped, or he does know and isn’t helping for one reason or another. It just strikes one as odd.

It also appears from an outside perspective that Tao Ruspoli, despite being who invited Lauren to live at the commune he created, has not made any sort of effort to publicly share Lauren’s flyers, participate in S&R, or create/donate to a reward despite having plenty of money. Perhaps Tao is working behind the scenes, maybe along with Strauss. Maybe not.

All anyone seems to know is that Lauren has now been missing an entire summer, and they are scared for her safety and wellbeing.

On February 3rd, 2020, 21 year old Caleb Nathaniel Smith was found dead, his nude body laying in a marsh 5 miles from the Flying J gas station where he was last seen. Just two days later, 20 year old Keeslyn Noel Roberts disappeared from the same gas station.

On Thursday, January 16, 2020, Chatsville, Georgia native Caleb Nathaniel Smith told his grandma that he was going to the nearby city of Rome to hang out with friends for a few hours. He told her to leave the deadbolt unlocked because he was planning on returning home that night.

Caleb stopped to get gas at the Flying J gas station/Denny’s restaurant near State Route 136 and I-75 in Resaca, Georgia (about 28 miles from Rome). He entered the gas station at 12:32 AM per gas station camera.

The gas station camera shows one male customer sitting alone at a table in the Denny’s section of the gas station; Caleb sits down at a different table facing the man.

A few minutes later, he calls his granny to let her know where he was, and that he didn’t have enough gas to get to Rome. He let her know that he was going to ask the man at Flying J for $5 for gas.

Caleb goes over and talks to the man on two separate occasions. It’s not known whether he gave Caleb money for gas or not. After the second interaction, Caleb goes and sits back down alone at the table facing the man.

He then gets up and leaves the gas station, never to be seen alive again.

Caleb’s grandma started getting very worried when he didn’t return home by morning, so she took it upon herself to drive over to the Flying J. His car was parked in the Flying J parking lot on the Denny’s side in the back of the building, out of sight of any cameras. Caleb’s grandma saw a suspicious white Nissan that freaked her out, so she decided to stay in her car. She called two family members to come be with her. When the family members arrived, the white car drove off. It is unknown if this car has anything to do with what happened to Caleb.

Caleb’s car was unlocked. His keys were on the floorboard. His cell phone was located in the glove box, and the battery was removed (also in the glove box). His car had half a tank of gas and was not on empty as he as told his grandma. His jacket was also left behind in the car, which was strange because it was a very cold night. His family then reported him missing.

Gordon County Sheriff’s Office officials say on January 16th and 17th, deputies searched the area around the truck stop, both on the ground and in the air, but their search yielded no results. It is also worth noting that the GCSO did not process Caleb’s car for evidence.

On February 3rd, his naked body was found 5 miles away from the gas station in a marshy, overgrown area of the county between the Sugar Valley and Hill City communities. According to the sheriff’s office, a citizen had found him in a poorly drained, heavily overgrown area. Earlier in the day, the fire department had been dispatched to the same general area in reference to a brushfire. It is unknown if the fire is related, and I can’t find any news articles saying that the fire in any way affected Caleb’s remains.

The initial report said that “no immediate indications of violence were apparent”, and the GBI autopsy revealed no indications of violence or evidence of foul play. The toxicology results showed he had died as a result of meth intoxication, and the death was ruled accidental. He also had Benadryl in his system. I investigated but can’t find any information regarding Caleb being a known drug user.

There were many shoe prints near where Caleb’s body was found, yet Caleb was found without shoes or socks on. He had no mud on the bottoms of his feet despite being found in a very muddy, marshy area. The only reasonable explanation I can come up with is that someone carried his body to the location it was found. His family wasn’t allowed to identify him – I’m assuming because of the state of his remains after being outside for days in a marshy area. Also, his clothes were nowhere to be found – they were never recovered, nor were his shoes. It is extremely unlikely he walked 5 miles, naked, unnoticed.

At the very least, someone is guilty of tampering with a dead body.At most, someone is guilty of murder.

Just two days after Caleb went missing, 20 year old Keeslyn Noel Roberts also disappeared from the same gas station. It is not known if these incidents are connected. Keeslyn has yet to be found, and there is a $6,000 reward for any information that leads to her safe return to her family.

When Keeslyn was last seen, she had entered an employee only entrance at the Denny’s part of the gas station. She was told by an employee that she wasn’t allowed to be back there and Keeslyn entered into an altercation with the employee. She dropped her backpack that held her ID, debit card, cash and phone charger as she fled the scene. A press release from the Gordon Co Sheriff’s Office confirms they were called to the truck stop that day about a suspicious female. Keeslyn’s white Toyota Corolla with belongings inside was found at the truck stop by her family on January 20. Some of her clothes were found near the trash dumpster at Flying J shortly after she went missing.

It’s worth mentioning that there is an active probation violation warrant out of Whitfield County for Keesyln – her initial arrest was due to drug charges. Her father, Eric Roberts, said Keeslyn does meth which is the same substance detailed in Caleb’s toxicology report. She was arrested a week before her disappearance for selling meth.

I also discovered, through information publicly available in news reports, Keeslyn and Caleb actually lived on the same street – Caleb lived at 4673 Old Federal Road in Chatsworth, and Keeslyn’s address was 4871 Old Federal Road. It’s definitely possible they knew of eachother, but Keeslyn’s dad and the GCSO says they have not discovered any evidence of communication between the two.

What happened to Caleb? What happened to Keeslyn? And are these cases connected?

Trucker’s Daughter Vanishes Under Mysterious Circumstances From Georgia Flying J

The Disappearance of Keeslyn Roberts

Where is Army veteran and college student James Liedtka? He has been missing from Eau Claire, WI since 2018.

James Liedtka has been missing since the early morning hours of November 4th, 2018. He was going to school at UW-Stout for Engineering while living with his sister Kristen and a roommate, Mai.

He was last seen on surveillance leaving college bar The Pickle on Water Street in downtown Eau Claire before vanishing. James was out with Mai and her friends, none of whom he knew particularly well, celebrating one of Mai’s coworkers’ birthday. On the surveillance video, he is seen walking behind the bar in the direction of a bike path. The Pickle happens to be mere feet from the river. James was separated from the people he was out with at this point, and his phone’s GPS showed that his last location was in the 1100 block on Menominee St.

He did have telephone contact with one of them at approximately 12:25am on Sunday morning, and according to the records, the last phone activity was on November 4, 2018 at 8:25 pm. I cannot find anywhere where it is reported what James supposedly said to the person he contacted at around midnight.

He was denied entry at The Pickle for supposedly being too drunk – this could definitely be true, but I must say my personal experience at The Pickle tells me that they could have turned him away for any number of reasons. The bouncers there have a reputation for being rude and sometimes outright sexist or racist. James’ best friend since childhood, Cody, said that James does not have a history of getting too intoxicated/black out drunk. At most he gets happy and giggly, and is by all accounts a fun and kind guy to be around.

Cody says that, to him, as James’ best friend since the 3rd grade, James looks pissed/stressed in the last known CCTV footage of him.

Cody also says that James didn’t talk about Mai much. James’ aunt, Valerie, said that her brother (James’ dad) said Mai could be “overbearing” and “texted James a lot” – his dad didn’t initially worry when Mai called him saying James was missing on Sunday morning (they had gone out Saturday night).

Police and fire officials conducted a routine search of the Chippewa River for clues into his disappearance with no luck. “We don’t have any definitive information to say he’s actually in the river, we’re just covering our bases,” said Lt. Derek Thomas of the Eau Claire Police Department.

The area is also surrounded by woods. I lived in Eau Claire for about five years and did a few searches for James by myself. I think of him very often. His aunt Valerie relocated to Eau Claire when James went missing; she has been desperately searching for her nephew and any clues to his whereabouts.

In the episode of Vanished about James, his family says the roommate he went out with that night has not been cooperative in the search whatsoever. They have avoided the family and moved out of the apartment they shared with James almost immediately after the disappearance. James was kind and took this person in when they had nowhere else to go, and their behavior has been a bit suspicious. They could be entirely innocent here, obviously, but it is strange to me that they don’t seem to want to help look for James. During the week after his disappearance, Kristen texted Mai to ask a few questions about when she last saw James. Mai texted her back and said, simply, “Talk to the police.”

James is 5’7″, weighs 170 pounds, and was last seen wearing a baseball cap, a maroon shirt, and jeans.

Police said they don’t believe foul play is involved in his disappearance.

If you have any information regarding the young missing veteran, please contact the Eau Claire Police Department at 715-839-4972.

Young mom experiencing mysterious illness goes missing on a cold December night – is her husband (who claims he has amnesia and doesn’t remember his wife) to blame?

It has been more than 30 years since the unresolved disappearance of Kerry A. O’Brien-Krueger, a 31-year-old Burlington woman with a strong career who was a much-loved mother, friend, daughter, and sister.

Kerry O’Brien Krueger lived in Burlington, Wisconsin with her husband Tracey and 3 year old daughter, Megan. She was employed in PR at Gander Mountain near Wilmot, Wisconsin. Her husband worked at a newspaper in Burlington as a photographer.

Tracey and Kerry had an on-and-off again relationship including a called-off engagement before finally tying the knot. Police learned from friends and relatives of the couple that Kerry and Tracey’s marriage was not doing well, and Kerry had confided in a friend that she was planning on filing for divorce if the relationship did not improve quickly. In the recent Vanished podcast about this case, Kerry’s brother described Tracey as “quiet” and “just kind of there”, noting that he was never particularly involved in Kerry’s family get-togethers.

Kerry was suffering from an undiagnosed illness going on for about 6 months at the time of her disappearance which consisted of intense stomach pains, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss. The illness often left her so weak that she was forced to call into work, and could some days hardly lift her head from her pillow. She had been to numerous doctors and underwent gastrointestinal testing, but didn’t seem to be getting any definitive results. In 2014, Kerry’s sister Molly said she believed her sister was being poisoned – a belief strengthened by the fact that Tracey would not let the police take Kerry’s hairbrush as evidence during the investigation.

On December 5, 1989, Kerry disappeared.

Tracey claimed that Kerry had told him she was being sent to a trade show in Wyoming with someone named Jim to replace a sick co-worker. She supposedly left at 4am for a flight leaving out of the Chicago-O’Hare airport. The investigation showed there was no trade show in Wyoming.

The Kruegers’ house was searched, but no evidence related to the disappearance was discovered. Several of her relatives joined the search and said that she left many personal belongings one would take on a trip: luggage, makeup, cash, ID, credit cards, clothes.

kobk2

Here is where this case gets spectacularly ridiculous:

Tracey was given a polygraph test in January 1990; the results were inconclusive.

He was scheduled to take another test soon after, but he cancelled after having a “health crisis” at work; he claimed this was a sudden bout of amnesia that made him forget the last 10 years of his life. Including his wife and daughter.

Due to his supposed health problems, he never did take the second polygraph test. He has never been charged in connection with his wife’s case and there have been no arrests made, but Kerry’s family definitely suspects that Tracey murdered Kerry and disposed of her body. When police searched the house, they also searched Tracey’s truck, which had dirt on it that is not consistent with the natural dirt in Burlington.

Kerry only had one business trip for Gander Mountain and that had happened in 1987. Tracey told friends and family very often that “Kerry was traveling on business”. She would return home and be surprised at questions from friends and family regarding her recent business trips. Kerry, in fact, rarely left Burlington besides going to work in Wilmot.

The weekend before Kerry was last seen, her little sister went Christmas shopping with Kerry and Tracey. Tracey had a brand new pick up truck that “his friend Bob let him borrow”. After Kerry’s disappearance, it was discovered that Tracey bought the truck himself and likely forged Kerry’s signature on the loan agreement. The couple was in debt at the time and Kerry’s family said there is no way she would agree to purchasing this vehicle; she was a very frugal woman.

Racine County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Heather Spranger said that the cased moved away from Kerry voluntarily leaving after it was discovered that her husband replaced the bed in the master bedroom after his wife went missing. “Investigators were never able to locate that bed,” Spranger said.

Tracey’s excuse for this was that he wanted his wife to come home to a new waterbed. Her family says she had absolutely zero interest in a waterbed.

In 1992, Tracey Krueger’s brother told someone his brother killed his wife. The person he confided in notified law enforcement. When confronted with this information both at the time and in a recent interview, Tracey Krueger’s brother said it was a “joke” and he had no knowledge of what happened on December 5, 1989.

Her daughter Megan firmly believes that her mother ran away and started a new life, pointing to diary entries of her mother’s that point to Kerry experiencing a “deep, dark depression”. It should be noted this diary was from Kerry’s adolescence. Megan also says that, when her mother was a journalist before acquiring her PR position with Gander Mountain, she had once written a piece regarding changing one’s identity. Megan says her father “loves and misses” her mother – which I find interesting because I thought he couldn’t remember who she even was.

Kerry’s family is adamant she would not leave her daughter behind. Her bank accounts have not been touched and her social security number has never been used since her disappearance.

Anyone with information regarding the disappearance of O’Brien-Krueger is asked to contact Investigator Heather Spranger at 262-636-3367. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous may contact Crime Stoppers of Racine County at 888-636-9330.

“Rosie, if you’re out there… I still have the same number”: A mother desperately searches for her missing 21 year old daughter for 10 years in rural Wisconsin

Rose Marie Bly of rural St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin was reported by her husband to have left her home at about 7:30pm on August 21, 2009. The 21 year old newly married mother of two reportedly left to go to Cushing, Wisconsin – a distance of just 5 miles – to meet up with her cousin. The stories vary on whether she was supposed to meet her cousin at her house, or at a bar.

Rose never arrived at her destination, according to her husband.

Rose’s mother has told people that the cousin said they had NOT made plans to meet that night.

Five days later, her undamaged white Pontiac Grand Am was found in Grantsburg (17 or so miles north from her house). The car was found in a parking lot that is often used by truckers to park their tractor trailers, and the keys were not found.

Unfortunately, the discovery of her vehicle did not lead to her whereabouts. Detectives did collect evidence and DNA from the vehicle.

Rose was wearing a pair of jeans, a green v-neck sweater over a white tank top and a pair of flip-flop sandals. Rose has a tattoo of two cherries on her right ankle, and her ears and belly button are pierced.

She enjoyed riding horses, and there has been speculation that she suffered a head injury due to falling from a horse about a week prior to her disappearance. The last time Rose talked to her mom, two days before going missing, she complained of headaches. Her mom told her to go to the doctor, but there is no evidence that she did so.

It was stated early on in the investigation that her husband passed a polygraph and is not a suspect in Rose’s disappearance. However, there is a new sheriff who deeply cares about the case and is trying hard to solve it. Claims regarding the husband’s innocence are noticeably missing from the more recent appeals regarding Rose. It seems that a few people close to her definitely suspect his involvement.

If this case interests you, the Facebook group entitled Help Find Rose Marie Bly has some incredibly interesting conversations between friends and family members that go back for the last decade – the husband has made comments on this page defending himself as recently as one year ago.

There are some allegations that Rose’s husband and sister were sleeping together when she went missing, that he failed to notify Rose’s mother for over a day after her disappearance, and that his dad (Rose’s FIL) is a truck driver who was familiar with using the lot in Grantsburg in which Rose’s car was found. Rose’s best friend, Nicole, has stated that Rose’s husband was controlling. Rose was not allowed to get a job or even leave her home to see friends or family.

Chris filed for divorce only 3 weeks after Rose went missing.

Rose’s husband had accused her of slapping him, and she accused him of putting her in a headlock and slamming her to the ground, according to police and court records. He filed for divorce in June, but they reconciled and he withdrew the petition. Rose’s family and friends state she was looking into divorce lawyers prior to her disappearance.

“I hope she’s OK, and I hope she gets a hold of somebody,” Christopher Larson said when reached by phone back in 2009 by a Twin Cities news reporter, shortly after his wife’s disappearance. He wouldn’t discuss the disappearance further.

The sheriff’s office has never identified any suspects or any possible motive.

Candus Harer, Rose’s mother, has never given up the search for her daughter. In a video distributed on social media by Polk County Sheriff’s Office in 2019, her mother states, “It’s just not a good feeling… I wish I knew where she was. My life will never be normal without knowing where my daughter is.”

Rose’s children were so young at the time that they have never known their mother.

To date, the sheriff’s department has investigated more than 200 tips and conducted over 150 interviews. Investigators scoured her phone records, drained a lake, and followed up on several reports of sightings.

“This mystery is solvable,” stated Sheriff Waak of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office in 2019. “We just need to find that vital piece of information.”

If you have any information on the disappearance or whereabouts of Rose Bly please contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at 715-485-8300.
